Dowry means money or property that a bride brings to her husband as a condition of marriage. This illegal practice of earning money has become a tradition in our society. This is simply shameful. This evil is working at the root of our society. It is an unbearable burden for poorer parents. There are several factors behind this bad practice. This practice has actually come from Hindu communities who give many precious things to the brides as they do not inherit the property of their parents. There is a section of people who have a greedy mentality. They want to earn a lot of money giving pressure on the parents of the bridegrooms. They think that it is their right to claim and have dowry from the guardians of the brides as they have spent a lot on educating the bridegrooms. So in many cases, the poor parents fall in great problems to marry their daughters off. Thus this system affects society. This practice degrades the mentality of people. It also breeds greed for money and social unrest. No man of good mentality can support this evil practice. The female is also human beings like men. They have all the equal rights of the society. We cannot buy or sell them like commodities. So this evil thing should not continue to destroy the whole society. The anti-dowry campaigns should be intensified in all fields of human activities, especially mass media can play a pivotal role to make people conscious about the bad effects of the dowry system. Our governments must formulate a strict law to apply against the dowry system. Then only this social curse eliminated and we can expect a dowry free society.
