 Articles (পদাশ্রিত নির্দেশক): 

Article হচ্ছে  Adjective-এর শ্রেণিভূক্ত  Determiner.

Article কাকে বলে:

যে word  বা শব্দ  Noun অথবা Noun phrase  (adjective + noun) -এর পূর্বে বসে   উক্ত  Noun-টির নির্দিষ্টতা বা অনির্দিষ্টতা নির্দেশ করে, তাকে Article   বলে।  ইংরেজিতে Article তিনটি।  তারা হচ্ছে: a,  an  এবং   the.

Article কত প্রকার ও কি কি?

Article দুই প্রকার:  1. Indefinite Article     2. Definite Article

Indefinite Article:

Indefinite শব্দের অর্থ অনির্দিষ্ট। যে Article কোন Noun অথবা Noun phrase  (adjective + noun) -এর পূর্বে বসে ঐ  Noun-কে নির্দিষ্ট করে বুঝায় না, তাকে Indefinite Article বলে।

মনে রাখতে হবে,  কোন Article ঠিক noun -এর পূর্বে ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে অথবা প্রথমে Article তারপর adjective তারপর noun-এভাবে ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে। যেমন:

This is an apple= এটি একটি আপেল। [এখানে noun-এর পূর্বে  Article ব্যবহৃত হলো]। আবার যদি বলি: It is a rotten apple = এটি একটি নষ্ট আপেল। [এখানে adjective + noun-এর পূর্বে Article ব্যবহৃত হলো]।

এখানে আরও একটি লক্ষ্যনীয় বিষয় এবং তা হলো,  আমরা যখন   Indefinite Article ব্যবহার করব, তখন যে শব্দের পূর্বে Article ব্যবহার করবো, তার প্রথম অক্ষরের উপর ভিত্তি করেই Indefinite Article ব্যবহার করব। যেমন: প্রথম বাক্যে  an apple,  পরবর্তি  বাক্যে a rotten apple. আরেকটি উদাহরণ লক্ষ্য করো;  It is a problem= এটি একটি সমস্যা।   It is an unusual problem= এটি একটি অস্বাভাবিক সমস্যা।   Indefinite Article দুটি। তারা হচ্ছে:  a  এবং an.

Indefinite Article-এর ব্যবহার:

1. Singular  কোন Noun (অনির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তি বা বস্তু)  শব্দের পূর্বে  a  অথবা  an বসে। Noun শব্দটি  Consonant    দ্বারা শুরু হলে a বসে, আর  উক্ত Noun-টি যদি  Vowel  দ্বারা শুরু হয়, তবে an বসে। যেমন:

He is a teacher. I saw an elephant. একইভাবে,  a boy;  a car;   a bike;   a zoo;   a dog.  আবার  an egg;   an apple;   an idiot;  an orphan.

2. Noun শব্দটি Consonant    দ্বারা শুরু হলেও যদি শব্দটি উচ্চারণ করতে প্রথমে Vowel sound আসে, তবে সেক্ষেত্রে a না  বসে an বসে। যেমন:

an M.A;   an L.L.B;  an M.B.B.S, an F.R.C.S

My brother is a B.A, but my sister is an M.A. [এখানে M অক্ষরটি উচ্চারণ করতে Vowel ‘a’  অক্ষরের ন্যায় উচ্চারণ চলে আসছে। তাই এক্ষেত্রে M Consonant  হলেও তার পূর্বে an ব্যবহৃত হচ্ছে]।

একইভাবে Noun শব্দটি Vowel    দ্বারা শুরু হলেও যদি শব্দটি উচ্চারণ করতে  ইউ (yu)  অথবা ওয়া (wa)-এর মতো হয়, তখন Noun-টির পূর্বে an  না  বসে a  বসে। যেমন:

• Mobile phone is a useful device.   
• He is a European. 
• He was a one-time hero.   
• That was a once in a life-time experience.
• That is a unique scenery.
• This is an ewe.

3. কোন ব্যক্তির পেশা (Profession), জাতীয়তা ( Nationality) ও ধর্ম  (Religion) বর্নণা করতে  a / an   ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন:

• My brother is a doctor.   
• Rifat is an engineer. 
• He is an American. 
• He is a muslim.

4. Noun শব্দের প্রথমে অনুচ্চারিত  (Silent)  ‘H’ থাকলে, সেই Noun-এর পূর্বে an বসে। যেমন: ‍

an hour;   an heir;   an honest.   He is an honest man.

5. কিছু শারীরিক অসুস্থতা বা অবস্থা বর্নণা করতে  a / an ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন:

• Rahi has a cold. 
• Fariha has a heart attack. 
• He has a sore throat.
• একইভাবে, a stroke;  a tumor;  a sore throat;  a sore back;    a sore foot;    a headache;   a toothache;  a backache etc.

Definite Article:

Definite শব্দের অর্থ নির্দিষ্ট। যে Article কোন Noun অথবা Noun phrase  (adjective + noun) -এর পূর্বে বসে ঐ  Noun-কে নির্দিষ্ট করে বুঝায়, তাকে Definite Article বলে। Definite Article একটি, তা হচ্ছে: the.

Definite Article-এর ব্যবহার:

1. বাংলা  শব্দের পর টি, টা, খানা, খানি, গুলি ইত্যাদি যুক্ত থাকলে অথবা শ্রোতাকে নির্দিষ্ট Noun-এর বিষয়ে কিছু বলার জন্য Noun-টির পূর্বে the ব্যবহার করতে হয়। যেমন:

The student is reading a book= ছাত্রটি  বই পড়ছে। [এখানে ‘student’-এর পূর্বে  ’the‘ ব্যবহার করে বিশেষ (particular) ’student’ সম্মন্ধে বলা হচ্ছে। একইভাবে: The players are playing in the field. I want to read the book.

2. পূর্বে অনির্দিষ্টভাবে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে, এমন Noun-কে পরবর্তিতে নির্দেশ করার জন্য the ব্যবহার করতে হয়। যেমন:

A man had a donkey. One day the man took the donkey to the market to sell.

3. মানুষের দল, শ্রেণি বা গোষ্ঠি (group of people) বুঝাতে Noun-এর পূর্বে the বসে। এই ক্ষেত্রে Noun-কে Plural রুপে গণ্য করা হয়। যেমন:

• The rich-এর অর্থ সাধারণভাবে সব ধনী লোক। 
• The poor are not always happy.
• I think the rich should pay more taxes.
• The elderly require special care.
• He has given a lot of money to the poor.
• They are collecting money for the blind.
• The righteous/The religious/ The pious are happy.
• The English is a brave nation.
• The Canadian speaks English like the English.

এই নিয়মে সাধারনত: যে সকল শব্দগুলির পূর্বে the ব্যবহৃত হয়, তারা হলো:

poor,  old,  blind,  deaf,  sick,  dead,  disabled,  unemployed,  injured. এই  expression গুলি সর্বদাই plural. তাই আমরা কখনো Singular অর্থে  ‘A blind’ কিম্বা    ‘An unemployed’ বলতে পারব না। আমাদের বলতে হবে: A blind man কিম্বা An unemployed person.

4. ইতর প্রাণি ও বস্তুর জাতি (Class) বুঝাতে Noun-এর পূর্বে the বসে। যেমন:

• The rose is a lovely flower.
• The cow is a useful animal.

5. পৃথিবী, আকাশ, চন্দ্র, সূর্য প্রভৃতি প্রাকৃতিক একক সৃষ্টির নামের পূর্বে the বসে। যেমন:

the earth;     the sun;    the moon প্রভৃতি। The earth revolves round the sun.

6. ঋতু (Season)  বা মৌসুম ও বিভিন্ন দিক যেমন: East, West, North, South-এর পূর্বে the বসে। যেমন:

The spring;   The East;   The west;   The sun rises in the East and sets in the west.

7. নদী (River),  সাগর (Sea),  উপসাগর (Gulf), মহাসাগর (Ocean), দ্বীপপুঞ্জ Group of Islands), পর্বতশ্রেণি (Mountain ranges), জাহাজ (Ship), superlative degree,  ক্রমিক সংখ্যা ( Ordinal number) ইত্যাদির পূর্বে the বসে। যেমন:

The Padma;  The Jamuna;   The Red  sea;   The Bay of Bengal; The Atlantic Ocean;   The Pacific Ocean   The Andamans;   The Himalayas;  The Rocky Mountains (কিন্তু পর্বতের একটি চূড়া (Mount) অথবা part of the name of a mountain-এর পূর্বে the বসে না। যেমন: Mount Everest;  The Titanic, She is the third girl, He is the most handsome 

8.  যে সকল দেশের নামের সাথে ‘s’ / ‘es’,  Kingdom, States, Republic থাকে, তাদের নামের পূর্বে the বসে। যেমন:

the United Kingdom;  the United States;  the kingdom of Bhutan; the Netherlands;   the Philippines. এতদ্বসংগে মনে রাখতে হবে যে, শুধু Great Britain ব্যতীত অন্য কোন   দেশের নাম যদি  একের অধিক শব্দে লিখা হয়, তবে তার পূর্বে the বসে।

9. সংবাদ পত্রের নামের পূর্বে the বসে। যেমন:

The Ittefaq;   The Times;  The Washington Post. The Daily Star

10. (a) বিখ্যাত স্থাপনা (Famous building/architecture), বিখ্যাত শিল্পকর্ম (Famous work of Art), ‍গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সংস্থা বা সংঘ (Important Organization),   যাদুঘর   (Museum), স্মৃতিসৌধ (Monument)-এর নামের পূর্বে the বসে। যেমন:

The Empire State Building;   The Taj Mahal;  The Mona Lisa;  The United Nations;  The Jatio Smirity Shoudho.

11. Superlative degree ও তুলনা বুঝাতে comparative degree এর পূর্বে the বসে।

a) He is the best boy in our class.

b) Of the two girls she is the more beautiful.

c) The more you read, the more you learn.

d) The more, the merrier.

12. Plural noun and uncountable noun এর পৃর্বে কখনো a, an বসেনা।

The mangoes are sweet.

Milk is nutritious.
