What is an idiom? An idiom is an expression or phrase whose meaning does not relate to the literal meaning of its words. In other words “Idioms mean something different than the individual words.

💦 ২০টি Word বা Phrase নিয়ে কথা বলব যেগুলো আসলে আক্ষরিক অর্থ না বুঝিয়ে অন্য অর্থ বুঝায় সেগুলো Idioms ।

White Elephant

যা খুব প্রয়োজনী নয়, কিন্তু সেটার জন্য অনেক টাকা খরচ করতে হয়। যা অনেক ব্যয়বহুল।

Ex: He invested his savings in the business and it's turned into white elephant 🐘. 

White Lie

একটা ছোট মিথ্যা কথা যেটাতে কারো ক্ষতি হয়না বা কেউ দু:খ পায়না।

Ex: I like the dinner (but you actually didn’t because you don’t want to hurt her)

White Colour

সবকিছু পরিপাটি, বা নিয়ম অনুযায়ী হয়ে থাকে।

Ex: Your job is a white colour job.

Blue Colour

এটিও White Colour এর মত একি অর্থ প্রকাশ করে তবে White colour হচ্ছে মেধা ব্যবহার করে কাজ করা আর Blue color হচ্ছে শারীরিক শক্তি ব্যবহার করে কাজ করা বুঝায়।

Out of the Blue

যে কাজটা অপ্রত্যাশিতভাবে হয়ে যায়।

Ex: He called me out of the blue I didn’t expect his call.

Once in a Blue Moon

যেই ঘটনাটা খুব কম ঘটে অথবা যে কাজটা খুব কম হয়।

Ex: She visits me once in a blue moon.

I have the Blues

কোন কারণে সাময়িক দু:খ পাওয়া।

Ex: I have the blues in this winter clime because it becomes dark so early these days.

Blue Blood

এটা সাধারণত নেতিবাচক অর্থে ব্যবহার করা হয়। যার অর্থ খুব ধনী পারিবারে সন্তান বা সদস্য

Ex: The magistrate may be from blue blood.

To Paint the Town Red

বাইরে ঘুরা, শপিং করা, আর খাওয়া দাওয়া করা।

Ex: After finishing my exam, I would go to paint the town red.

Red Tape

কোনকিছুর ‍শুরু করতে যে নিয়ম বা ধরাবাধা রয়েছে সেগুলোকে Red tape বলে।

Ex: Starting a company means, we have to go through red tape.

Roll out the Red Carpet

কাউকে ভালভাবি খাতির যত্ন করা।

Ex: His friend rolls out the red carpet for him when he visits her.

Red Herring

একটা ঘটনা যেটা প্রধান লক্ষ থেকে মনোযোগ অন্য দিকে নিয়ে যায়।

Ex: The police investigated this case, they had a lot of clues, but everything turned out to be red herring.

Catch Somebody Red-Handed

কোন অবৈধ কাজে হাতেনাতে ধরা পড়া।

Ex: He was caught red-handed stealing money from the office.

Silver Spoon in one’s Mouth

কোন সম্ভ্রান্ত পরিবারে জন্ম নেওয়া, যেখানে কোন সমস্যায় পড়তে না হয়।

Ex: She was born with silver spoon in her mouth.

Golden Opportunity

অনেক ভাল কিছু করার সুযোগ পাওয়া।

Ex: Working in an online business company is a golden opportunity.

Golden Parachute

পিছিয়ে পড়ার পর হঠাৎ এগিয়ে যাওয়া।

Ex: The company is at loss because of the manager, but he still lots of money.

Green with Envy

কোন কারণে কাউকে হিংসা করা।

Ex: That girl got the dress that was my favorite. And the dress is sold out of the store and that’s why I am green with envy.

Green Light

কোন কিছু করার জন্য অনুমতি পাওয়া।

Ex: I got the green light to watch a movie with her.

Green Area

কোন কিছুর ব্যাপারে না জানা।

Ex: This Physics chapter is a green area for me.
