1. Starting in Who:

By whom + helping verb + Object will be subject + past participle?

How to make passive of imperative sentences: 


Respect your betters.

Let your betters be respected.

Let not the beggar be insulted.


Obey your parents.

Let your parents be obeyed.


Mind your own business.

Do not take overripe fruit.

It is suggested that we should start our work.           



                  Change of Voice in case of ----- IMPERATIVE SENTENCES



An imperative sentence is changed from active to passive voice according to the message contained in the sentence.  For this purpose words used are as follows :


-- If it contains an order or a command   :   You are ordered to or You are commanded to


-- If it contains a request :         You are requested to


-- If  it contains an advice :    You are advised to


-- If it contains a negative order : You are forbidden to


-- If it contains 'Let us'  : It is suggested that we should or It is                proposed that we should

He kept me waiting.

= I was kept waiting by him.

He let me go.

= I was let go by him.

He shocked me.

= I was shocked at him.

I am going to buy some pens.

= Some pens are going to be bought by me.

She has to solve the problems.

= The problems have to be solved by her.

She killed herself

= She was killed by herself.

They made me captain.

= I was made captain by them.

Honey tastes sweet.

= Honey is sweet when it is tasted./ Honey is tasted sweet.

I gave her a nice pen.

= She was given a nice pen by me.

He said that he had klled a lion. 

= It was said by him that a lion had been killed by him.

What cannot be cured must be endured.

= We must endure what we cannot cure.

They left the wounded man behind.

= The wounded man was left behind by them. 

Everybody says that he will get a good job.

= It is said that a good job will be got by him.


I am obliged to do this

= Someone obliges me to do this.

I wish to enjoy the song.

=I wish the song to be enjoyed.

I suppose you know it.

= It is supposed by me that it is known to you.

I want to do the work.

=I want the work to be done.

Nobody can put up with such insult.

=Such insult can not be out up with by nobody.

Let him do the work 

=Let the work be done by him.

Let me tell the truth.

=Let the truth be told by me 

Do not lie in the court.

=You are ordered not to lie in the court

Give me a pen 

=Let a pen be given to me.

Shut the door 

=Let the door be shut 

Never tell a lie 

=Let not a lie be told ever.

Do not pluck the flowers.

= Let not the flowers be plucked.

You need not punish him.

=He need not be punished by you.

I am to do the job.

=The job is to be done by me.

Please speak in English.

=You are requested to speak in English.

Go there 

=You are ordered to go there.

Do not run in the sun 

=You are advised not to run in the sun.

The books are selling well.

=The books are being sold well 

The skin feels smooth 

=The skin is smooth when it is felt.

We all know that the sun rises in the east 

=It is known to all that the sun rises in the east.

Change the voice.

=Let the voice be changed.

Tough voice change:


1. A promise should be kept( make an active)

= One should keep one's promise.( Make an active)

2. I was obliged to go.( Make an active)

= Circumstances obliged me to go.

3. Indiscipline should not be encouraged.( Make an active)

= We should not encourage indiscipline.

4.What cannot be cured must be endured.( Make an active)

= We must endure what we cannot  cure.

5. The lion is called the king of beasts.( Make an active

= People call the lion the king of beasts.

6.He was murdered at daylight.(make an active)

=Someone murdered him at daylight 

7.we are laughed at by them.( Make an active)

=They laugh at us.

8. Your word should be kept.(make an active)

= Keep your word/You should keep your word.

9. The tree has been uprooted. ( Make an active)

=A strong wind has uprooted the tree. 

10. My suggestions was not accepted.(make an active)

= They did not accept my suggestions.
