Articles are basically adjectives defining a noun as specific or unspecific.There are 3 articles in English. A, an and the. Articles are also called identifiers.


āφāϰ্āϟিāĻ•েāϞ (Article) āĻšāϞো āĻŽূāϞāϤ Adjective (āĻŦিāĻļেāώāĻŖ) āϝা āĻ•োāύো Noun āύিāϰ্āĻĻিāώ্āϟ āύাāĻ•ি āĻ…āύিāϰ্āĻĻিāώ্āϟ āϤা āύিāϰ্āĻĻেāĻļ āĻ•āϰে । āĻ•োāύো Noun (āĻŦ্āϝāĻ•্āϤি āĻŦা āĻŦāϏ্āϤু)-āĻāϰ āύিāϰ্āĻĻিāώ্āϟāϤা āĻŦা āĻ…āύিāϰ্āĻĻিāώ্āϟāϤা āĻŦুāĻাāϤে Noun āĻāϰ āĻĒূāϰ্āĻŦে āφāϰ্āϟিāĻ•েāϞ (Article) āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšৃāϤ āĻšā§Ÿ। A, An āĻ“ The āĻ•ে āφāϰ্āϟিāĻ•েāϞ (Article) āĻŦāϞে। 


āύোāϟ: āϏাāϧাāϰāĻŖāϤ Consonant sound āĻāϰ āφāĻ—ে a āĻāĻŦং Vowel sound āĻāϰ āφāĻ—ে an āĻŦāϏে। Plural number āĻāϰ āφāĻ—ে āĻ•āĻ–āύāĻ“  a āĻŦা an āĻŦāϏেāύা। Cross (×) is also an article.


āφāϰ্āϟিāĻ•েāϞ āĻ•াāĻ•ে āĻŦāϞে āϜাāύাāϰ āĻĒāϰ āĻāĻŦাāϰ āωāĻĻাāĻšāϰāĻŖāϏāĻš Article Rules āĻŦাংāϞাāϤে āĻļিāĻ–ি:


1.The girl was sitting on a bench.


2.After working for a long time, a mug of coffee really refreshes us.

Classification of articles (āφāϰ্āϟিāĻ•েāϞ āĻ•āϤ āĻĒ্āϰāĻ•াāϰ āĻ“ āĻ•ী āĻ•ী?)

Articles are of two types.


1.Definite Article (āύিāϰ্āĻĻিāώ্āϟ) The

2.Indefinite Article āĻ…āύিāϰ্āĻĻিāώ্āϟ (A, An)


āĻŦুāĻিāϝ়ে āĻŦāϞি। āϧāϰুāύ, āφāĻĒāύি āĻāĻ•āϟি āĻ•āϞāĻŽ āϚাāύ। āϏেāϟি āĻšāϤে āĻĒাāϰে āϝেāĻ•োāύো āĻ•āϞāĻŽ। āĻ…āϰ্āĻĨাā§Ž āφāĻĒāύাāϰ āϚাāĻ“āϝ়াāϟা Indefinite। āϏেāĻ•্āώেāϤ্āϰে āϝে āφāϰ্āϟিāĻ•েāϞāϟি āĻŦāϏāĻŦে āϏেāϟি āĻšāϞো A. āĻ•িāύ্āϤু āφāĻĒāύি āϝāĻĻি āύিāϰ্āĻĻিāώ্āϟ āĻ•āϰে āĻāĻ•āϟি āĻ•āϞāĻŽ āϚাāύ, āϝে āφāĻĒāύাāϰ āϐ āĻ•āϞāĻŽāϟিāχ āϞাāĻ—āĻŦে, āϤāĻ–āύ āϏেāϟি āĻšāĻŦে Definite āϚাāĻ“āϝ়া। āϤāĻ–āύ The āĻšāĻŦে।


Definite Article:

āϝে āφāϰ্āϟিāĻ•েāϞ (Article) āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা āύিāϰ্āĻĻিāώ্āϟ āĻ•োāύো āĻŦ্āϝāĻ•্āϤি, āĻŦāϏ্āϤু āĻŦা āĻĒ্āϰাāĻŖীāĻ•ে āύিāϰ্āĻĻেāĻļ āĻ•āϰা āĻšāϝ় āϤāĻ–āύ āϤাāĻ•ে Definite Article āĻŦāϞে। āĻ…āϰ্āĻĨাā§Ž āύিāϰ্āĻĻিāώ্āϟ āĻ•āϰে āϝāĻ–āύ āĻ•োāύো āĻŦ্āϝāĻ•্āϤি āĻŦা āĻŦāϏ্āϤুāĻ•ে āύিāϰ্āĻĻেāĻļ āĻ•āϰা āĻšāϝ় āϤāĻ–āύ Definite Article āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰ āĻ•āϰা āĻšāϝ়। “The” āĻ•ে Definite Article āĻŦāϞা āĻšā§Ÿ।


Indefinite Article:

āϝে āφāϰ্āϟিāĻ•েāϞ (Article) āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা āĻ•োāύ āĻŦ্āϝāĻ•্āϤি āĻŦা āĻŦāϏ্āϤুāĻ•ে āĻ…āύিāϰ্āĻĻিāώ্āϟ āĻ­াāĻŦে āĻŦুāĻা⧟ āϤাāĻ•ে Indefinite Article āĻŦāϞে। A/An āĻ•ে Indefinite Article āĻŦāϞা āĻšā§Ÿ।


Usage of Articles:

Article usage basically depends on the sound (Consonant sound & Vowel sound).


1. Consonant sound āĻšāϞে āϏাāϧাāϰāĻŖāϤ āĻāĻĻেāϰ āφāĻ—ে "a", vowel sound āĻšāϞে āĻāĻĻেāϰ āφāĻ—ে "an" āĻŦāϏে।


Example:

A book/ A pen

An igloo/ An orange


2. Vowel āĻāϰ āωāϚ্āϚাāϰāĻŖ ‘u/ew/eu’ (āχāω) āĻŦা āĻ“āϝ়া (One) āĻāϰ āĻŽāϤ āĻšāϞে āĻāĻĻেāϰ āφāĻ—ে “a” āĻŦāϏāĻŦে; āĻ…āύ্āϝāĻĨা⧟ “an”  āĻŦāϏāĻŦে।


Example:

A ewe, A uniform, A unicorn, A University, A unique, A useful, A one taka note, A one eyed man, A union, A European, A userer, A useful, A Euro


3. If the pronunciation of 'h' is silent, then put 'an'

An honest, an hour, an honourable, an heir


4. Degree āĻŦা Title āĻāϰ āϏংāĻ•্āώিāĻĒ্āϤ āϰূāĻĒেāϰ āĻ•্āώেāϤ্āϰে āωāϚ্āϚাāϰāĻŖ āϝāĻĻি Vowel āĻāϰ āĻŽāϤো āĻšāϝ় āϤāĻŦে āϤাāϰ āφāĻ—ে an  āĻŦāϏে। āϏাāϧাāϰāĻŖāϤ āĻāχ Degree āĻŦা Title āĻ—ুāϞো M, L, F, N, S āĻĻিāϝ়ে āĻļুāϰু āĻšāϝ়।

Examples:

He is an MBBS

She is FRCS, NBR, SDO

He is an LLB.


5. āĻāĻ•াāϧিāĻ• Adjective āϝāĻ–āύ āĻāĻ•āχ āĻŦ্āϝāĻ•্āϤি āĻŦা āĻŦāϏ্āϤুāĻ•ে āύিāϰ্āĻĻেāĻļ (qualify) āĻ•āϰে āϤāĻ–āύ āĻĒ্āϰāĻĨāĻŽ Adjective āĻāϰ āφāĻ—ে “a/an” āĻŦāϏে।

Example: He has a nice and costly pen.


*āĻāĻ•াāϧিāĻ• Adjective āϝāĻ–āύ āφāϞাāĻĻা āφāϞাāĻĻা āĻŦ্āϝāĻ•্āϤি āĻŦা āĻŦāϏ্āϤুāĻ•ে qualify āĻ•āϰে āϤāĻ–āύ āĻĒ্āϰāϤ্āϝেāĻ• Adjective āĻāϰ āφāĻ—ে “a/an” āĻŦāϏে

Example: He has a nice book and a black pen.


6. *āϤুāϞāύা āĻ…āϰ্āĻĨে Proper noun āϝāĻĻি Common noun āϰূāĻĒে āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšৃāϤ āĻšā§Ÿ āϤাāĻšāϞে āϤাāϰ āĻĒূāϰ্āĻŦে Article ‘a’/ ‘an’ āĻŦāϏে। āϝেāĻŽāύ:

 i. You are a Shakespeare, I see

 ii. You will be a Fazlul Haque,I think

 iii. Labib will be able to become an Imran khan.


7.āĻ•িāĻ›ু phrase-āĻ Article ‘a/an’ āĻŦāϏে। āϝেāĻŽāύ:

 a lot of/a number of/an amount of/a great deal of/after a while/a group of/a leaf of/a cup of/ a basket of/a glass of/ in a nutshell.

Mr. Shakil has a lot of money.


*Article āĻ•িāĻ›ু āĻ•িāĻ›ু āĻļāĻŦ্āĻĻেāϰ āĻ•্āώেāϤ্āϰে use āĻ•āϰা āĻšā§Ÿ āύা-

Meals– Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

Planets– Earth/Mars


*Towns– Singapore/Dhaka…. Except for UK/USA/ UAE


Sports– Cricket/Football/Basketball


Subjects– Physics/Math


*Abstract Noun–  Beauty/health/honesty/ bravery/ courage 


*Usage of A/An 

āĻāĻ•āĻ• āĻŦা unit āĻŦুāĻাāϤে a/an āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšৃāϤ āĻšā§Ÿ।

Example: An ounce is enough.


*Rate/ value/ measurement etc. (āĻĻাāĻŽ/āĻ“āϜāύ/āĻŽাāĻĒ) āϏূāϚāĻ• word āĻ—ুāϞোāϰ āφāĻ—ে a/an āĻŦāϏে।

Example: Fish sells at four hundred taka a kilo. 


*Each/per āĻ…āϰ্āĻĨে hour/day/month-  word-āĻ—ুāϞোāϰ āφāĻ—ে “a” āĻŦāϏে।

Example: He earns one thousand taka a month. (per/each).


*What āĻĻি⧟ে āϏূāϚিāϤ Exclamatory Sentence āĻāϰ āĻ•্āώেāϤ্āϰে “What” āĻāϰ āĻĒāϰে “a/an” āĻŦāϏে।

Example: What a nice dress it is!

What an amazing landscape!


*Few/ little/ lot of/ good deal/ good many etc. phrase āĻāϰ āφāĻ—ে “a” āĻŦāϏে

Example: There are a few books on the table.


*Quite, many, such, but, merely, not, rather āĻāϰ āĻĒāϰে  “a” āĻŦা “an” āĻŦāϏে।

Example: Mr. Tajbir is rather an honest man.


*Such/rather/quite/many + a/an + Noun. 

āϝেāĻŽāύ:

 i. Such a boy does well in the exam. 

ii. She is rather a darling.

 iii. It is quite a nuisance to write to everyone.

 iv. Many a person is present in the public meeting.


*Usage of 'The':

Uncountable noun āĻāϰ āĻ•্āώেāϤ্āϰে āύিāϰ্āĻĻিāώ্āϟ (specific) āĻ•āϰে āĻŦোāĻাāύোāϰ āϜāύ্āϝ āϤাāϰ āφāĻ—ে the āĻŦāϏে।

Example: The water in the tank is clean


 i. The boy who came here is my brother.

 ii. The pen which was bought yesterday looks nice. 

iii. I know the place where he lives.

iv. I know the time when he comes home.


 * The +Adjectives.(āĻĒুāϰো āĻļ্āϰেāĻŖী āĻŦা āĻ—োāώ্āĻ ী āĻŦুāĻাāϤে Adjective āĻāϰ āĻĒূāϰ্āĻŦে Article ‘the’ āĻŦāϏে)। āϝেāĻŽāύ:

 i. The poor are born to suffer.

ii. The rich are not always happy.

iii. The blind should be helped.

iv. The unfed should be fed.

v. The pious are happy. 

vi. The idle/lazy do not succeed in life.

vii. The wise are respected everywhere.

viii. The brave deserve the fair.

ix. The bald are hated. 

x. The honest prosper in life.


*Sentence āĻ āĻ…āĻĻ্āĻŦিāϤী⧟ āĻĒ্āϰাāĻ•ৃāϤিāĻ• āĻŦāϏ্āϤুāϰ āύাāĻŽেāϰ āφāĻ—ে the āĻŦāϏে। 

Example: The earth moves around the sun. The sun gives us heat and light 


*āϝে āϏāĻ•āϞ āĻĻেāĻļেāϰ āύাāĻŽেāϰ āφāĻ—ে

The āĻŦāϏে।

 Kingdom /republic/states/union āĻĨাāĻ•ে āϤাāĻĻেāϰ āφāĻ—ে The āĻŦāϏে।

Example: The United States of America.The UK.


*āĻĻুāϟি āĻŦāϏ্āϤু/āĻĒ্āϰাāĻŖী/āĻŦ্āϝāĻ•্āϤিāĻ•ে āĻĒৃāĻĨāĻ• āĻĒৃāĻĨāĻ• āĻŦুāĻাāϤে The āĻŦāϏে। āϝেāĻŽāύ- The Secretary and the Chairman have done this. (āĻāĻ–াāύে āϏেāĻ•্āϰেāϟাāϰী āĻāĻŦং āϚে⧟াāϰāĻŽ্āϝাāύ āĻĻুāχāϜāύ āĻŦ্āϝāĻ•্āϤিāĻ•ে āĻŦুāĻাāϚ্āĻ›ে, āϤাāχ The āĻŦāϏেāĻ›ে। People, public āχāϤ্āϝাāĻĻি collective noun āĻāϰ āφāĻ—ে “The” āĻŦāϏে।

Example: The majority of our people are illiterate. 


*“The” can also be used to indicate any specific important historical date/event.

Example: Babar won the Battle of Panipat


*“The” can also be used as a possessive adjective before common nouns

Example: He caught me by the hand (the=his).


*“The” can also be used before the ordinal numbers, e.g first, second, third.

Example: I got the first prize in the race.


*More usage 

Schools, Colleges and Universities

Example- the University of Florida/ the college of Arts.


*Ordinal numbers before nouns

Example- the First World War/ the third chapter/ the Korean War.


*Historical documents

Example- the Magna Carta/the Constitution


*Ethnic group–

Example- the Chakmas/ the Marmas


*Don’t use the-

Schools, Colleges and Universities when the phrase begins with a proper noun

Example- Dhaka University (not The Dhaka University)


*Cardinal numbers after nouns

Example- World War One(not The World War One) / Chapter three (not The Chapter three)


*Sports, subjects, holidays

Ex- Baseball (not The baseball)


Mathematics (not The mathematics)


Christmas (not The Christmas)

āϜাāĻšাāϜ: The Titanic, The Queen Victoria.

āĻĻৈāύিāĻ• āϏংāĻŦাāĻĻ: ‘The Prothom Alo’, ‘The Daily Star’.

ā§­। Superlative Degree-āĻāϰ āφāĻ—ে The āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšৃāϤ āĻšā§Ÿ। āϝেāĻŽāύ- He is the best of the class.


ā§Ž। āϝāϤো āϤāϤো āĻ…āϰ্āĻĨে Comparative Degree-āĻāϰ āφāĻ—ে The āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšৃāϤ āĻšā§Ÿ। āϝেāĻŽāύ- The more, The merrier.

The sooner, the better.

⧧⧍। āĻ—ুāϰুāϤ্āĻŦ āĻĻেāĻ“ā§Ÿা āĻŦুāĻাāϤে Noun-āĻāϰ āφāĻ—ে The āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšৃāϤ āĻšā§Ÿ। āϝেāĻŽāύ- The verb is the word (the main word) in a sentence. The quality of the milk is cent percent pure. 


*āĻŦিāĻļেāώ āύি⧟āĻŽাāĻŦāϞি

Emphasis āĻŦা āϜোāϰ āĻŦোāĻাāϤে āĻ…āύেāĻ• āϏāĻŽā§Ÿ a āĻŦা an āĻŦāϏে। āϝেāĻŽāύ- Not a student was present, Not a gun was fired, Not a drop of water was in the bottle.


*āφāĻŽāϰা āϜাāύি, Superlative degree-āĻāϰ āφāĻ—ে the āĻŦāϏে। āĻ•িāύ্āϤু Superlative ‘most’ āĻ…āϰ্āĻĨ āϝāĻ–āύ āĻ–ুāĻŦ (very) āĻŦোāĻা⧟ āϤāĻ–āύ The-āĻāϰ āĻĒāϰিāĻŦāϰ্āϤে A āĻŦāϏে। āϝেāĻŽāύ- It was a most interesting matter. I saw a most beautiful drama.
