WH-Questions (WH Questions)

WH-Question কাকে বলে?

আমরা দৈনন্দিন জীবনে বিভিন্ন তথ্য জানার জন্য প্রশ্ন করি। যে প্রশ্নগুলো Who, Whom, Whose, What, Which, When, Where, Why, How ইত্যাদি শব্দ দিয়ে শুরু হয়, সেগুলোকে WH-Questions বলে।

Definition (English):
A WH-Question is a question that begins with a WH-word (Who, Whom, Whose, What, Which, When, Where, Why, How) to ask for specific information.

WH-Question কেন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ?

১. ইংরেজিতে সঠিকভাবে প্রশ্ন করতে শেখায়।

২. Spoken English-এর জন্য অত্যন্ত প্রয়োজনীয়।

৩. Grammar পরীক্ষায় নিয়মিত আসে।

৪. Scholarship,  SSC, HSC, Admission, BCS ও Competitive Exams-এ গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।

৫. Reading ও Writing দক্ষতা বাড়ায়।

Person পরিবর্তনের নিয়ম (Important Rule)

WH-Question গঠন করার সময় সাধারণত—

1st Person → 2nd Person

2nd Person → অপরিবর্তিত

3rd Person → অপরিবর্তিত

পরিবর্তনগুলো

I → You

Me → You

My → Your

Mine → Yours

We → You

Us → You

Our → Your

Ours → Yours

Example

Statement: He calls me a fool.

WH Question: What does he call you?

WH-Questions-এর ৯টি প্রধান ধরণ:

1. Who [কে]

*সাধারণত ব্যক্তিবাচক Singular ও Plural Subject-এর পরিবর্তে Who বসে।

বাক্য: Tamal is coming to us.

Wh Question: Who is coming to you?

বাক্য: Sima is talking to Hasan.

Wh Question: Who is talking to Hasan?

বাক্য: Rabindranath was the first Indian  to get a Nobel Prize.

Wh Question: Who was the first Indian to get a Nobel Prize?

*Who দিয়ে যদি Object-কে প্রশ্ন করা হয়, তবে Sentence-এর গঠন ভিন্ন হয়।

বাক্য: I went with my elder brother?

Wh Question: Who did you go with?

Object সম্পর্কে প্রশ্ন

I went with my elder brother.
→ Who did you go with?

2. Whom [কাকে]

সাধারণত ব্যক্তিবাচক Singular/Plural Object-কে প্রশ্ন করতে Whom ব্যবহৃত হয়।

বাক্য: He met the president there.

Wh Question: Whom did he meet there?

বাক্য: The pen belongs to Saikat.

Wh Question: Whom does the pen belong to?

—তবে কার সঙ্গে, কার দ্বারা, কার প্রতি ইত্যাদি অর্থে প্রশ্ন করতে Whom-এর আগে অথবা পরে Preposition ব্যবহার করা হয়।

বাক্য: He goes back to his own people.

Wh Question: Whom does he go back to?

বাক্য: He resides with a friend.

Wh Question: With whom does he reside?

Whom does he reside with?

বাক্য: I want to talk to Mr Hanif.

Wh Question: Whom do you want to talk to?

3. Whose (কার)

—Possessive object বা Subject-এর পরিবর্তে Whose ব্যবহৃত হয়।

বাক্য: Mita's sister is a doctor.

Wh Question: Whose sister is a doctor?

বাক্য: These books are mine.

Wh Question: Whose books are these?

4. What [কী/কি]

—What সাধারণত ব্যক্তিবাচক Singular ও Plural subject / Object Complement-এর পরিবর্তে ব্যবহৃত হয়। Sentence-এর Main verb যদি be verb হয়।  

বাক্য: His name is Mr. Rahman.

Wh Question: What is his name?

বাক্য: I like to drink coffee and tea.

Wh Question: What do you like to drink?

—What দিয়ে যদি Subjectকে প্রশ্ন করা হয়, অর্থাৎ What যদি subject-এর পরিবর্তে বসে।

বাক্য: This made him sad.

Wh Question: What made him sad?

বাক্য: Her result made me happy.

Wh Question: What made you happy?

বাক্য: The noise disturbed me.

Wh Question: What disturbed you?

বাক্য: He looks for a job.

Wh Question: What does he look for?

—কোনো Sentence-এর Object-এ উল্লেখিত কোনো Adjective যদি Noun-এর আগে বসে Noun-টি একটি বিশেষ ধরনের প্রকারভেদ বোঝায় এবং What দিয়ে যদি ওই Adjective-কে প্রশ্ন করা হয়।

বাক্য: They have a wonderful goose.

Wh Question: What kind of goose do they have?

বাক্য: He has bought a nice dress.

Wh Question: What kind of dress has he bought?

5. Which [কোনটি] নির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর মধ্যে নির্বাচন করতে।

—সাধারণত Singular ব্যক্তি ও বস্তুবাচক Subject ও Object-এর পরিবর্তে which ব্যবহৃত হয়। সাধারণত Object-এর বিশেষভাবে নির্দিষ্ট Noun-কে প্রশ্ন করতে Which-এর ব্যবহার ব্যাপক।

বাক্য: I want this boy.

Wh Question: Which boy do you want?

বাক্য: I wanted blue pen. 

Which pen did you want?

6. When [কখন]

—কোনো নির্দিষ্ট সময়ে সংঘটিত কোনো ক্রিয়ার সময়কে নির্দেশ করে প্রশ্ন করতে When দ্বারা প্রশ্ন করতে হয়।

বাক্য: He will come tomorrow.

Wh Question: When will he come?

বাক্য: I get up early in the morning.

Wh Question: When do you get up?

7. Where [কোথায়]

—স্থান নির্দেশ করে প্রশ্ন করতে Where দ্বারা প্রশ্ন করতে হয়।

বাক্য: I will put it on the table.

Wh Question: Where will you put it?

বাক্য: He works in Dhaka.

Wh Question: Where does he work?

I was born in Sirajganj- Where were you born?

8. Why [কেন]

—কোনো কারণ জানার জন্য অর্থাৎ Sentence-এর উল্লিখিত কোনো ঘটনা সংঘটিত হওয়ার কারণ জানার জন্য Why দ্বারা প্রশ্ন করা হয়।

বাক্য: He is proud of his son.

Wh Question: Why is he proud?

বাক্য: Jamila went there to bring a glass of water.

Wh Question: Why did Jamila go there?

বাক্য: She is studying attentively to make a good result.

9. How (কেমন/কীভাবে) কেমন, কীভাবে, কেমন করে প্রভৃতি অর্থে প্রশ্ন করতে How ব্যবহৃত হয়।  

বাক্য: They come to college by bus.

Wh Question: How do they come to college?

বাক্য: He moved as slowly as a turtle.

Wh Question: How did he move?

—কিন্তু Be verb বা am, is, are, was, were যদি Main verb হয়।

বাক্য: Our principal is honest and well-behaved.

Wh Question: How is your principal?

বাক্য: It was terribly hot yesterday.

Wh Question: How hot was it yesterday?

বাক্য: Shamim is 6 feet tall.

Wh Question: How tall is Shamim?

বাক্য: The boy can write very fast.

Wh Question: How fast can  the boy write?

How-এর গুরুত্বপূর্ণ রূপগুলো

How old → বয়স

How long → সময়/দৈর্ঘ্য

How far → দূরত্ব

How many → গণনাযোগ্য সংখ্যা

How much → অগণনীয় পরিমাণ/দাম

How often → কত ঘন ঘন

How soon → কত তাড়াতাড়ি

How fast → গতি

How tall → উচ্চতা

How high → উচ্চতা

How deep → গভীরতা

How wide → প্রস্থ

How heavy → ওজন

How big → আকার

How hot → তাপমাত্রা

How cold → ঠান্ডা

Important "How" WH-Questions (Easy Rules for Students)

1. How long = কতক্ষণ / কতদিন

যখন সময়ের দৈর্ঘ্য বোঝায়। (যেমন: for, since, hours, days, months, years, It took)

Example:

I studied for 3 hours. → How long did you study?

It took 5 hours to go- How long did it take to go?

2. How often = কত ঘন ঘন

যখন কাজটি কতবার হয় বোঝায়। (যেমন: always, usually, often, once, twice, every day)

Example:

She visits us twice a week. → How often does she visit you?

3. How many = কয়টি / কতজন

যখন গণনা করা যায় এমন বস্তুর সংখ্যা বোঝায়। (যেমন: books, students, pens)

Example:

I have five books. → How many books do you have?

4. How much = কত / কত টাকা

যখন অগণনীয় বস্তুর পরিমাণ বা দাম বোঝায়। (যেমন: water, milk, money, price)

Example:

The bag costs 500 taka. → How much does the bag cost?

The pen cost 50 taka- How much did the pen cost?

5. How far = কত দূর

যখন দূরত্ব বোঝায়। (যেমন: kilometre, mile, metre)

Example:

My school is 5 km away. → How far is your school?

6. How tall = কত লম্বা

যখন মানুষের বা বস্তুর উচ্চতা বোঝায়। (যেমন: feet, centimetres, metres)

Example:

Rahim is 6 feet tall. → How tall is Rahim?

7. How old = বয়স কত

যখন বয়স বোঝায়। (যেমন: years old)

Example:

Mina is 12 years old. → How old is Mina?

8. How high = কত উঁচু

যখন কোনো কিছুর উঁচু অবস্থান বোঝায়। (যেমন: feet high, metres high)

Example:

The wall is 10 feet high. → How high is the wall?

9. How deep = কত গভীর

যখন গভীরতা বোঝায়। (যেমন: metres deep)

Example:

The river is 20 metres deep. → How deep is the river?

10. How wide = কত চওড়া

যখন প্রস্থ বোঝায়। (যেমন: feet wide, metres wide)

Example:

The road is 30 feet wide. → How wide is the road?

11. How heavy = কত ভারী

যখন ওজন বোঝায়। (যেমন: kg, kilogram)

Example:

The box weighs 20 kg. → How heavy is the box?

12. How fast = কত দ্রুত

যখন গতি বোঝায়। (যেমন: km/h, miles per hour)

Example:

The car was going 80 km an hour. → How fast was the car going?

13. How big = কত বড়

যখন আকার বোঝায়।

Example:

The house is very big. → How big is the house?

14. How small = কত ছোট

যখন আকার ছোট বোঝায়।

Example:

The baby is very small. → How small is the baby?

15. How soon = কত তাড়াতাড়ি / কত শীঘ্র

যখন অল্প সময়ের মধ্যে কখন হবে বোঝায়। (যেমন: in two days, in a week)

Example:

He will return in two days. → How soon will he return?

মনে রাখার সহজ কৌশল

সময়ের দৈর্ঘ্য → How long

কতবার → How often

গণনাযোগ্য সংখ্যা → How many

পরিমাণ / দাম → How much

দূরত্ব → How far

উচ্চতা (লম্বা) → How tall

বয়স → How old

উঁচু → How high

গভীরতা → How deep

প্রস্থ → How wide

ওজন → How heavy

গতি → How fast

আকার (বড়) → How big

আকার (ছোট) → How small

কত তাড়াতাড়ি → How soon

মনে রাখবে (Shortcut)

WH Word- কী জানতে চায়? 

Who- ব্যক্তি (Subject) 

Whom-ব্যক্তি (Object)

Whose- মালিকানা

What- কী / কী ধরনের

Which- কোনটি

When- কখন

Where- কোথায়

Why- কেন

How- কীভাবে / কেমন

Golden Rule of WH-Questions

WH Word + Auxiliary Verb + Subject + Main Verb + Object + ?

Examples

Where do you live?

Why did he come?

When will she arrive?

What are you doing?

Who called you?

WH-Question-এর ২টি প্রধান Structure

1. Subject WH-Question (কর্তা সম্পর্কে প্রশ্ন)

ব্যাখ্যা:

যখন WH-word (Who, What, Which)-ই বাক্যের Subject (কর্তা) হয়, তখন do/does/did ব্যবহার করা হয় না।

Structure:

WH-word + Verb + Object/Complement + ?

Examples:

Who broke the glass? = কাঁচটি কে ভেঙেছে?

Who called you? = তোমাকে কে ফোন করেছিল?

Which boy won the prize? = কোন ছেলে পুরস্কার জিতেছে?

What happened? = কি ঘটেছে?

✅ মনে রাখবে: Subject-এর প্রশ্ন হলে do/does/did লাগে না।

2. Object WH-Question (কর্ম বা অন্যান্য অংশ সম্পর্কে প্রশ্ন)

ব্যাখ্যা:

যখন WH-word বাক্যের Object, Place, Time, Reason, Manner ইত্যাদি সম্পর্কে প্রশ্ন করে, তখন Auxiliary Verb (do, does, did, is, are, was, were, has, have, will ইত্যাদি) ব্যবহার করতে হয়।

Structure:

WH-word + Auxiliary Verb + Subject + Main Verb + ... + ?

Examples:

Who did you meet? = তুমি কার সাথে দেখা করেছিলে?

What did he buy? = সে কি কিনেছিল?

Where does she live? = সে কোথায় থাকে?

When will they come? = তারা কখন আসবে?

Why are you crying? = তুমি কেন কাঁদছ?

✅ মনে রাখবে: Object বা অন্য তথ্যের প্রশ্ন হলে Auxiliary Verb ব্যবহার করতে হয়।

সহজে মনে রাখার কৌশল

Subject-এর প্রশ্ন

WH-word + Verb + ... ❌ do/does/did নেই

Example:

Who broke the glass?

Object-এর প্রশ্ন

WH-word + Auxiliary + Subject + Verb + ... ✅ do/does/did/is/are... আছে

Example:

Who did you meet?

Shortcut

কর্তা (Subject) জানতে চাইলে → WH + Verb + object / complement.

কর্ম/স্থান/সময়/কারণ ইত্যাদি জানতে চাইলে → WH + Auxiliary + Subject + Verb

• সহজে মনে রাখো

যে অংশের উত্তর জানতে চাও, সেটি বাদ দাও। ( অর্থাৎ underline করা অংশ বাদ) 

WH-word + Auxiliary + Subject + Verb বসিয়ে প্রশ্ন তৈরি করো।
