Noun and its classification:

যে সকল word দ্বারা ব্যক্তি, বস্তু, প্রাণী, জায়গা, পদার্থ, কোনো কিছুর অবস্থা বা গুণের নাম বোঝায়, তাকে Noun বলে। যথা: Amreen, book, cat, Dhaka, honesty etc. 

Definition: Nouns are words used to identify people, places, things, and ideas. 

In short, naming words are called nouns.

Classification of nouns: Noun কত প্রকার?

Noun কত প্রকার- এই প্রশ্নের উত্তর কিছুটা ঝামেলার! Noun-কে প্রথমত দুই ভাগে ভাগ করা যায় । যথা: 

1. Concrete Noun 

2. Abstract Noun 

Concrete Noun:

যে Noun-গুলো চোখে দেখা যায়, স্পর্শ করা যায়, যাদের শারীরিক উপস্থিতি আছে, সেগুলোকে Concrete Noun বলা হয়। যেমন, 

Zarif is reading a book. 

Diamond is a precious metal.

বাক্য দুইটিতে Zarif, book, Diamond, metal- এই সবগুলো বিষয়কে চোখে দেখা যায়, উপস্থিতি অনুভব করা যায়। তাই এগুলো Concrete Noun. 

Abstract Noun:

যে Noun-গুলো চোখে দেখা যায় না, স্পর্শ করা যায় না, যাদের শারীরিক উপস্থিতি নেই, শুধু অনুভব করা যায় সেগুলোকে Abstract Noun বলা হয়। যেমন,

Health is wealth.

Honesty is the best policy

Kindness is a noble virtue. 

বাক্য তিনটিতে Health, Honesty, Kindness- এই বিষয়গুলো চোখে দেখা যায় না, তাই এগুলো Abstract Noun. 

Concrete Noun-কে আবার চার ভাগে ভাগ করা যায়, এগুলো হলো, 

1. Proper Noun

2. Common Noun

3. Collective Noun

4. Material Noun

Proper Noun:

যে Noun দ্বারা নির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তি, বস্তু বা স্থানের নাম বোঝায়, তাকে Proper Noun বলে। Proper Noun always starts with capital letter. 

যেমন:  Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh.

William Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet.

বাক্যদ্বয়ে Dhaka, Bangladesh,  William Shakespeare, Romeo   Juliet শব্দগুলো হলো Proper Noun.

Common Noun:

কোন Noun যখন একই জাতীয় সকল ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর কোনো সাধারণ নাম বোঝায়, তখন তাকে Common Noun বলে। যেমন:

I know a boy who is excessively brilliant.

Einstein is a great scientist. 

বাক্যদ্বয়ে boy, scientist শব্দদুটি হলো Common Noun।

Collective Noun:

যে Noun দ্বারা এক জাতীয় কতগুলো ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর সমষ্টিকে বোঝায়, তাকে Collective Noun বলা হয়। যেমন:

The whole class burst into laughter.

Our team is better than yours. 

The police have dispersed the crowd. 

A herd of sheep is grazing in the field.

এখানে class, team, police, crowd, herd শব্দগুলো হলো Collective Noun।

Material Noun 

যে Noun দ্বারা কোনো বস্তুর নাম বোঝায়, কিন্তু গণনা করা যায় না, শুধু পরিমাপ করা যায় তাকে Material Noun বলা হয়। যথা:

Sugar is used for sweetmeat.   

Tea is a popular drink. 

We eat rice.

এখানে sugar, tea, rice শব্দগুলো Material Noun।

*আগেই বলেছি Noun কত প্রকার- এই প্রশ্নের উত্তর কিছুটা ঝামেলার! আমরা এতক্ষণ আলোচনা করেছি ইন্দ্রিয়গ্রাহ্যতার ভিত্তিতে Noun কত প্রকার- তা নিয়ে। অন্যদিকে, গণনার ভিত্তিতে Noun-কে দুইভাগে ভাগ করা যায়। যথা:

Countable & Uncountable Noun.

Countable Noun: Count শব্দের অর্থ গণনা করা। যে noun গুলোকে গণনা করা যায়, সেগুলোকে বলা হয় Countable noun. যথা—Book, Pencil, Chair, Cow etc. 

Note: Countable noun ‘ singular ’ এবং ‘ plural ’ উভয়ই হতে পারে।

Uncountable Noun:

যে noun গুলোকে গণনা করা যায় না, সেসব noun কে বলা হয় Uncountable noun।

Note: Uncountable noun সমূহ সর্বদাই Singular হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Accomodation (বাসস্থান), Advice (উপদেশ), Courage (সাহস), Decision (সিদ্ধান্ত), Equipment (উপকরণ), Information (তথ্য), Leisure (অবসর), Knowledge (জ্ঞান), Money (টাকা), Music (গান), News (খবর), Patience (ধৈর্য), Permission (অনুমতি), Scenery (দৃশ্য), Soap (সাবান), Arrangement (আয়োজন), Kindness (উদারতা), Honesty (সততা), Ability (সামর্থ্য), Bravery (বীরত্ব/ সাহসিকতা), Attitude (আচরণ), Boyhood (বাল্যকাল), Childhood (শৈশবকাল), Chairmanship (সভাপতিত্ব),Forgiveness (ক্ষমা), Esteem (শ্রদ্ধা), Depth (গভীরতা), Hope (আশা), Goodwill (সুনাম), Happiness (সুখ), Height (উচ্চতা), Beauty (সৌন্দর্য), Integrity (সততা), Joy (আনন্দ), Length (দৈর্ঘ্য), Anger (ক্রোধ).

A compound noun is a noun that is made up of two or more words. The separate words in a compound noun do not necessarily have to be nouns themselves, but they must communicate a specific person, place, idea, or thing.
