               Uses Of Prepositions

Engilsh-এর অন্যতম একটি গুরুত্ব পূর্ণ বিষয় হল : Preposition. খুব ভালো জ্ঞান থাকলেও Preposition এর সঠিক ব্যবহার সবাই করতে পারেন না । তাছাড়া যদি কেউ মুখস্ত করেন তাও কিছু দিন পরে ভুলে যান ।
Preposition এর ব্যবহার শিখবো, আসুন দেখে নেই নিয়ম কানুন।

1. At এর ব্যবহার :
-------------------------
অবস্থান বোঝাতে নাম উল্লেখিত ছোট স্থানের আগে যেমনঃ গ্রাম, এলাকা, মহল্লা ও ছোট শহরের আগে at বসে। যেমনঃ at Nimtia, at Aurangabad.

সময় বোঝাতে at বসে। যেমনঃ I go to bed at 10 o’ clock.

অবস্থা বোঝাতে at বসে। যেমনঃ The country is at war now.

হার / গতি বোঝাতে at বসে। যেমনঃ He was driving the car at 100 kilometers per hour.

দায়িত্ব বোঝাতে at বসে। যেমনঃ You must repair it at your own cost.

দূরত্ব বোঝাতে at বসে। যেমনঃ Alipurduar is at 50 kilometers from here.

বয়স বোঝাতে at বসে। যেমনঃ He lost his father at 10.

দিক বোঝাতে at বসে। যেমনঃ He pointed the gun at him.

নিম্নের শব্দ গুলোর পর At বসে।

2. Above এর ব্যবহার :

উপরে বোঝাতে above বসে। যেমনঃ The water came above our knees.

অবস্থান বোঝাতে above বসে। যেমনঃ The sun is above our head now.

পরিমাণে বোঝাতে above বসে। যেমনঃ Present temperature is above average.

এতটাই সৎ / ভালো বোঝাতে above বসে। যেমনঃ Ram is above suspicion.

অতিমাত্রা বোঝাতে above বসে। যেমনঃ I couldn’t hear him above the noise of the traffic.

3. About এর ব্যবহার :

সম্পর্কে / বিষয়ে বোঝাতে about বসে।
যেমনঃ I knew something about it.

চারদিকে বোঝাতে about বসে। যেমনঃ The runners were running about the circle.

উপলক্ষ বোঝাতে about বসে। যেমনঃ He came here about the marriage ceremony.

প্রায় / কাছাকাছি বোঝাতে about বসে। যেমনঃ He has lost about Rs. 1 lac .

4. After এর ব্যবহার :

পরে বোঝাতে after বসে। যেমনঃ He came after me.

অসংখ্যবার বোঝাতে after বসে। যেমনঃ I’ve told him time after not to do that.

পিছনে পিছনে বোঝাতে after বসে। যেমনঃ They run after the thief.

ব্যাপক সময় বোঝাতে after বসে। যেমনঃ He returned home after a month.

ঠিক পরবর্তী কোন কিছু বোঝাতে after বসে। যেমনঃ Ram is the tallest after Rahim.

মোটের উপর বোঝাতে after বসে। যেমনঃ After all, he is a good boy.

বিপরিত ঘটনা বোঝাতে after বসে। যেমনঃ The house is pleasantly cool after the extreme heat outside.

5. Among এর ব্যবহার:

কিছুর মধ্যে ( চারদিক বেষ্টিত ) বোঝাতে among বসে। যেমনঃ There is a house among the trees.

দু’য়েরঅধিকের মধ্যে বোঝাতে among বসে। যেমনঃ Divided the mangoes among the three boys.

6. Across এর ব্যবহার:

আড়াআড়ি ভাবে / অপর পার্শ্বে বোঝাতে across বসে।
যেমনঃ i. Go across the street.
ii. My house is just across the road.

7. By এর ব্যবহার:

কোন উপায় বা পদ্বতির মাধ্যমে বোঝাতে তার আগে by বসে। যেমনঃ By hard labour.

পাশে বোঝাতে by বসে। যেমনঃ He sat by me.

মাধ্যম বোঝাতে by বসে। যেমনঃ Ram achieved success by determination.

পথ অর্থে বোঝাতে by বসে। যেমনঃ I shall travel by road.

শপথ নেয়া বোঝাতে by বসে। যেমনঃ I swear by almighty God.

Passive Form-এ by বসে। যেমনঃ The work was done by me.

পরিমাপ বোঝাতে by বসে। যেমনঃ The room is 12 feet by 10 feet.

সময়(সুনির্দিষ্ট) বোঝাতে by বসে। যেমনঃ He will come back by 5 pm.

উন্নতির হার বোঝাতে by বসে। যেমনঃ They are improving day by day.

কারো সম্পর্কে জানতে অর্থ বোঝাতে by বসে। যেমনঃ He is an American by birth.

যানবাহনে ভ্রমণ বোঝাতে by বসে। যেমনঃ We went to Siliguri by bus.

নিম্নের শব্দ গুলোর পর by বসে-
accompanied, affected, judge.

8. Before এর ব্যবহার:

পূর্বে বোঝাতে before বসে। যেমনঃ He came before lunch.

সম্মুখে / সামনে বোঝাতে before বসে। যেমনঃ He stood before me.

তূলনামূলক ভাবে আগে / বিশেষ গুরুত্ব বোঝাতে before বসে। যেমনঃ He puts his work before everything.

9. Between এর ব্যবহার :

দুইয়ের মধ্যে বোঝাতে between ব্যবহৃত হয়।
যেমনঃ
i. He stood between his two brothers. ii.Divide the mango between two sisters.

10. Beyond এর ব্যবহার :

পিছনে / অপরদিক অর্থ বোঝাতে beyond বসে। যেমনঃ The road continues beyond the villages up into the hills.

সময়ের পরে বোঝাতে beyond বসে। যেমনঃ It won’t go on beyond midnight.

সাধ্যের বাইরে বোঝাতে beyond বসে।
যেমনঃ The car was beyond repair.

11. Beside এর ব্যবহার :

পাশে বোঝাতে by এর মত beside বসে।
যেমনঃ He sits beside me.

12. Besides এর ব্যবহার:

এছাড়াও বোঝাতে besides বসে।
যেমনঃ I have another pen besides this.

13. Below এর ব্যবহার :

নিম্নে বর্নিত, নির্দিষ্ট পরিমাণ বা সংখ্যা কম,পর্যায়ের নিচে বোঝাতে below বসে।
যেমনঃ i. My particulars are given below.
ii. Ram has got below 80% marks.
iii. He lives below middle class status.

14. Down এর ব্যবহার :

উপর থেকে নিচের দিকে বোঝাতে down বসে। যেমনঃ The boy has fallen down from the roof.

15. For এর ব্যবহার:

সময়ের আগে ধরে / যাবৎ / ব্যাপিয়া ( Period of time) বোঝাতে for বসে।
যেমনঃ It has been raining for two hours.

জন্য বোঝাতে for বসে।
যেমনঃ What can I do for you?

সাহায্য অর্থে বোঝাতে for বসে।
যেমনঃ Would you please do it for me?

কারন বোঝাতে for বসে।
যেমনঃ Maldah is famous for its mangoes.

সমর্থন বোঝাতে for বসে।
যেমনঃ Are you for the proposal?

মূল্য বোঝাতে for বসে।
যেমনঃI bought this pen for Rs.10.

বিনিময় বোঝাতে for বসে। যেমনঃ You will get a coupon for every Rs.100 you pay.

নিম্নের শব্দ গুলোর পর For বসে।
compensate, ask, affection, appetite, bound, care, desire, long, fit, search, seek, thirst, zeal, zest.

16. From এর ব্যবহার :

কারো নিকট হইতে অথবা কোন স্থান হইতে বোঝালে ঐ “হইতে” কথাটির জন্য ব্যক্তি বা স্থানের আগে from বসে।
যেমনঃ
আমার নিকট হইতে = from me.
দিল্লি থেকে = From Delhi.

i. The man come from abroad.
ii. Don’t get down from a running train.

নিম্নের শব্দ গুলোর পর From বসে।
refrain, resist, obstrain, prohibited, protect, prevent, preserve, aloof, different, suffer.

17. In এর ব্যবহার :

কোন বিষয় বা ভাষায় বোঝালে তার আগে in বসে। যেমনঃ in English, in Accounting, in Hindi.

বড় স্থান বোঝাতে in বসে।
যেমনঃ We live in Kolkata.

সময়ের ক্ষেত্রে ( মাস / বছর / ঋতুর নাম ) বোঝাতে in বসে। যেমনঃ We won independence in August in 1947.

ক্ষেত্র বোঝাতে in বসে। যেমনঃ I am unable to help you in this regard.

অবস্থা বোঝাতে in বসে। যেমনঃ He is in a good health.

বিবেচনা বোঝাতে in বসে। যেমনঃ You have to do it in your own interest.

পেশার ক্ষেত্র বোঝাতে in বসে। যেমনঃ He has been in politics.

মাধ্যম বোঝাতে in বসে। যেমনঃ You have to pay the bill in cash.

অনুপাতের ক্ষেত্র বোঝাতে in বসে। যেমনঃ In England, one in five enters higher education.

নিম্নের শব্দ গুলোর পর In বসে।
expert, excel, indulge, succeed, believe, assist, interested, consist (নিহিত অর্থে), lie, encourage, grory, persist, rich, trade.

18. Into এর ব্যবহার :

গতিশীলতা বোঝাতে into বসে। যেমনঃ The teacher entered into the class room.

অবস্থার পরিবর্তন বোঝাতে into বসে। যেমনঃ Water is changed into snow.

সংঘর্ষ বোঝাতে into বসে। যেমনঃ The truck crashed into a tree.

সংখ্যায় ভাগ হওয়া বোঝাতে into বসে। যেমনঃ They were divided into four groups.

নির্দেশ বোঝাতে into বসে। যেমনঃ Speak clearly into the microphone.

19. Of এর ব্যবহার:

সম্পর্ক বোঝাতে of বসে। যেমনঃ I know nothing of it.

অধিকার / মালিকানা বোঝাতে of বসে। যেমনঃ It is the house of Mr. Das.
উৎপন্ন / উদ্ভুত অর্থ বোঝাতে of বসে। যেমনঃ He comes of a respectable family.

উপকরণ বোঝাতে of বসে। যেমনঃ The house is made of brick.

কারন বোঝাতে of বসে। যেমনঃ The young boy died of cholera.

নিম্নের শব্দ গুলোর পর of বসে-
fond, sure, conscious, aware, inform, proud, boast, capable, deprieve, devoid, accused, charged, advantage, dull, afraid, approve, bereft, cause, consist(গঠিত অর্থে), cure, in the habit, in favour, envious, fear, full, ignorant, get rid, jealous, shortage.

20. On এর ব্যবহার :

নদীর তীরে বোঝাতে on বসে। যেমনঃ Patna is on the bank of Ganga.

কোন কিছুর উপরে সংলগ্ন / স্পর্শ বোঝাতে on বসে। যেমনঃ The cat is on the table.

Floor এর সংখ্যা বোঝাতে on বসে। যেমনঃ The office is on the 4th floor.

সীমানার উপর বোঝাতে on বসে। যেমনঃ Siliguri is on the south of Darjeeling

বার / তারিখের পূর্বে এবং দিবসের আগে বোঝাতে on বসে। যেমনঃ He will come on Sunday on the 5th May.

সম্বন্ধে বোঝাতে on বসে। যেমনঃ He wrote an essay on the Swami Vivekananda.

নির্ভরতা বোঝাতে on বসে। যেমনঃ The cow lives on grass.

অনুসারে বোঝাতে on বসে। যেমনঃ He has taken leave on medical ground.

সময়ের বর্ণনা বোঝাতে on বসে। যেমনঃ The Tajmahal looks beautiful on a moonlit night.

নিম্নের শব্দ গুলোর পর on বসে-
congratulate, comment, pride, rely, bestowed, insist, determined, depend, impose, reflect, take pity

21. Over এর ব্যবহার :

উপর বোঝাতে over বসে। যেমনঃ There is a bridge over the river.He jumped over the wall.

পারাপার / চাপা দেওয়া বোঝাতে over বসে। যেমনঃ They run over the glass.

সমগ্র / সারা অর্থ বোঝাতে over বসে। যেমনঃ They have traveled over the world.

বিপরীত পাশ বুঝাতে over বসে। যেমনঃ They live over the road.

অধিক বোঝাতে over বসে। যেমনঃ He was in China for over a month.

উপরস্থ কর্মকর্তা বোঝাতে over বসে। যেমনঃ He has a director over him.

মাধ্যম বোঝাতে over বসে। যেমনঃ He talked over telephone.

22. Off এর ব্যবহার :

দূরে / বিচ্ছিন্ন অর্থে off বসে। যেমনঃ i. Be off from here, ii. Switch the liight off.

23. Since এর ব্যবহার :

‘হইতে’ অর্থে point of time এর পূর্বে since বসে। যেমনঃ since 1990, since Sunday, since June.

24. To এর ব্যবহার :

কোন স্থানে আসা এবং যাওয়া বোঝালে ঐ স্থানের আগে to বসে।

যেমনঃ i. He goes to school every day. ii. He came to India in 1974.

বাক্যে Verb- এর শেষে তে থাকলে = to+V1 বসে। যেমনঃ i. He told me to read a book. ii.I have nothing to give you.

ব্যক্তির কাছে বোঝালে তার আগে to বসে। যেমনঃ He came to me.

সীমানার বাইরে বোঝাতে to বসে। যেমনঃ Japan is to the east of our country.

পর্যন্ত বোঝাতে to বসে। যেমনঃ They fought to the last.

পরিমান / হার বোঝাতে to বসে। যেমনঃ There are 2.54 c.m. to an inch.

নিম্নের শব্দ গুলোর পর to বসে।

25. Through এর ব্যবহার :

ভিতর / মধ্য দিয়ে বোঝাতে Through বসে। যেমনঃ He ran through the forest. He lived through struggle.

26. Under এর ব্যবহার :

নিচে বুঝাতে under বসে। যেমনঃ The ball is under the table.

ছোট / কম পরিমান / বয়স বোঝাতে under বসে। যেমনঃ i. He is under 20. ii. He earns under Rs.5000.

অধীনে অর্থ বোঝাতে under বসে। যেমনঃ The building is under construction.

অবস্থা বোঝাতে under বসে। যেমনঃ He is under sentence to death.

27. Up এর ব্যবহার :

নিচ থেকে উপরের দিকে বোঝাতে up বসে। যেমনঃ i. Go up the hill. ii. Climb up the tree.

28. With এর ব্যবহার :

সাথে বোঝাতে with বসে। যেমনঃ He came with me.

দ্বারা / দিয়া বোঝাতে with বসে। যেমনঃ I killed the snake with a stick.

আগমন অর্থে withবসে।। যেমনঃ The shadow lengthened with the approach of the sun.

নিম্নের শব্দ গুলোর পর with বসে-
burden, cope, keep, up, keep pace, acquitted, angry, annoy, beset, blessed, covered, compare(ব্যক্তির সাথে হলে with কিন্তু জিনিসের সাথে হলে to), content, familiar, invest, popular, reward.

29. Without এর ব্যবহার :

ছাড়া অর্থ বোঝাতে without ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমনঃ i. He found the place without difficulty. ii.We can’t live without water.

30. Within এর ব্যবহার :

সময়ের মধ্যে বোঝাতে within বসে। যেমনঃ He will come back within a month.

সামর্থ্যের মধ্যে বোঝাতে within বসে।
যেমনঃ We should live within our means. We should drive bike within limit.

          Some confusing Prepositions

1) রাস্তার নামসহ বাড়ির নম্বরের আগে at ব্যবহূত হয়। কিন্তু শুধু রাস্তার নাম বোঝালে in ব্যবহূত হয়।
যেমন: We live at 1B S Road, Murshidabad. They opened an office at 2 Central Road. We live in G T Road, Asansol. They have opened an office in Central Road.

2) বাড়ির সামনে বা পেছনে বোঝালে at বসে কিন্তু যানবাহনের সামনে বা পেছনে বোঝালে in ব্যবহূত হয়। যেমন: There is a garden at the front of our house and a pond at the back of our house. Please sit in the front of the car; don’t sit in the back.

3) শুধু রাত বোঝালে at ব্যবহূত হয়। কিন্তু গভীর রাত বোঝালে in ব্যবহূত হয়।
যেমন: We work by day but sleep at night. I woke up in the night.

4) .স্থায়ী কোনো কাজের সঙ্গে যুক্ত থাকা বোঝাতে at এবং স্থায়ী কোনো কাজের সঙ্গে যুক্ত থাকা বোঝাতে in ব্যবহূত হয়।
যেমন: They are at work now. Boys are at play now. He is in army. She is in politics.

5) খামার বোঝালে on এবং কারখানা বোঝালে তার আগে in ব্যবহূত হয়।
যেমন: He works on a farm; but his brother works in a factory.

6) হাতলবিহীন চেয়ার বোঝালে on এবং হাতলবিশিষ্ট চেয়ার হলে তার আগে in ব্যবহূত হয়।
যেমন: Don’t sit on that chair, it is broken. Please sit in this armchair,
7) ঘরের কোণ বোঝালে in বসে কিন্তু রাস্তার কোণ বোঝালে on/at ব্যবহূত হয়। যেমন:
There is a television in the corner of our drawing room. There is a tea-stall at/ on the corner of the street.

8) তাপমাত্রা ও উচ্চতার ক্ষেত্রে above ব্যবহূত হয়। আবার বয়স বোঝালে over ব্যবহূত হয়।
যেমন: The temperature is three degree above zero.The summit of Everest is about 8000 metres above the sea level. My grandfather is now over eighty. She has been here over two hours.

9) নদী, সীমানা, রাস্তা, ইত্যাদি অন্য পাশে বোঝাতে across/ over ব্যবহূত হয়।
যেমন: It is just across/over the border. It was coming towards me across/ over the bridge.

10) নির্দিষ্ট সময়ে শুরু বোঝালে Since বসে কিন্তু সময়ের সমষ্টি বোঝালে for বসে। since ব্যবহূত হয় শুধু Perfect Tense-এর ক্ষেত্রে। কিন্তু from ব্যবহৃত হয় সব Tense-এর ক্ষেত্রে। He has been there since Monday last. I will be at home from tomorrow. I haven’t seen you for a long time. I haven’t seen you since May. I just want to sit down for five minutes. I have known her since June ,2020
