Object Complement

An object complement is a word or phrase that follows and modifies or renames the direct object of a sentence. It provides more information about the object, often describing what it has become or what it is perceived to be.

Common Verbs That Take Object Complements. After these verbs we can get object Complement.

Make, Call, Elect, Name, Appoint, Consider, Find, Choose

Examples: She made me happy.

made- verb

me- direct object

happy - object Complement

They elected him President.

President- Object Complement

He called me intelligent.

Intelligent - Object Complement

I found the book boring"

boring- object Complement

"They are going to name the baby Ivan"

"The neighborhood elected Caroline president of the homeowners' association"

"He called the man a liar"

"We chose Bill as group leader"

"They found him in the kitchen"

How to Identify an Object Complement

1. Find the Direct Object – First, identify the verb and then ask "what?" or "whom?" to find the direct object.

2. Look for a Word that Describes or Renames the Direct Object – The object complement either describes (adjective) or renames (noun) the direct object.

3. Check if the Sentence Makes Sense Without It – Removing the object complement should leave a grammatically correct sentence, but with less information.

English origin

*supercalifragilisticexpialidocious - extremely good

floccinaucinihilipilification- unimportant, worthless or trivial
