Mainul Islam is a qualified farmer in Naogaon. Mr Islam was very brilliant as a student. He took his higher education from Bangladesh Agricultural University in Mymensingh. After completing his higher education, Mainul came back home and started advanced farming. He has two brothers who are graduates in different areas. The speciality of Islam family is that they all are living in their village and all have fame in their own fields. His younger brother, who is a Rajshahi University graduate, is a science teacher in a local school. His younger brother is a Social Science graduate and he too would like to start a local NGO to work for this area. When asked “What makes you decide to stay here in this village?”, mr Islam smiled. He said, “Look, it’s true that we could leave this village for a city life. I could be an officer or my brother could be a bureaucrat. But it didn’t attract us. We are sons of this soil. Yes, we have education but does education prepare a person only to be an officer? Don’t we have any obligation to the soil that has made us what we are?” he also added that every educated individual shouldn’t be a job seeker. He continued that since his discipline was Agriculture, after his education, he took the occupation of a farmer. In response to the question whether they have any frustration to live in a village, he confirmed that there very pleased with their life. He said, “I work in my own farm, stay with my family members, pass time with my old friends, and sleep at my own home. All these count a lot.”

Mr. Islam is right. Many people go to cities and forget or llosen their roots knowingly or unknowingly. Mr. Islam and his brothers are great –– they never forgot their roots. They not only stuck to their own roots, they have been torch bearers for others to be respectful of their roots.

(b) Yes, I do agree to this statement, because to seek a job is not the only mission to have higher education. There are so many avenues through which one can flourish. An educated person has, of course, some obligations to his/her birthplace. And creating self-employment, he/she can lead a peaceful life, can create job opportunities for rural people and can thereby repay the liability to the birthplace.

(c) The speciality of the Islam family is that in spite of their higher education and having ability to manage good jobs in the city, they did not leave their village. Rather, they are all living in the village and trying their best to develop it.

(d) Mainul became a farmer out of sense obligation to the soil that has made him what he is. According to his belief, his working in his own farm, staying with his family members, passing time with his old friends and sleeping at his own home count a lot to him.

  Fish population is at the risk from global warming. Climate change is increasing the water temperature in lakes, rivers and seas. Read the passage on Gustave Eiffel and his Tower and answer questions No. 4 and 5.

The Eiffel Tower was named after Gustave Eiffel, a Frenchman who designed the tower. He was born into a prosperous family in 1832. He took his graduation from the Central School of Engineering in Paris and went to work for a railway construction company. His mother thought that he would not go far. “Be patient, mum. I’ve some ideas. You’ll see.” Gustave assured his mother.

For years, Gustave made plan after plan of dams, factories, stations and structures of great sized buildings. All over Europe Engineers copied them. In the middle of 1980’s, a group of French industrialists persuaded the government to organize a World Fair in paris. Gustave proposed a 989 feet tower of iron as a symbol of the fair. The construction of the tower began in January 1887. Forty engineers and designers worked under Gustave ‘s direction for two years. The tower was finally completed in March 1889. It is the highest structure of iron made by man. No such structure had ever been constructed before. It is regarded as one of the wonder of the world.

The Eiffel tower is one of the greatest and most significant buildings in the world. The tower was named after Gustave, a French engineer who built it. He was born in France in 1832. After graduating from the Central School of Engineering in Paris, he went to work for a railway company. In the middle of the 1880's under the persuasion of a group of a group of French industrialists, the government organized a World Fair in Paris. Gustave Eiffel proposed a 989 feet tower of iron as symbol of exhibition. With the assistance of forty engineers and designers, Eiffel build the tower during the period of 1887 - 1889. It was the highest structure ever made by men.

Read the passage. Then answer the questions below:-

The National memorial at Savar is a symbol of nation’s respect for the martyrs of the War of Liberation. It is built with concrete but made of blood. It stands 150 feet tall but every martyr it stands for stands so much taller. It is an achievement the dimension of which can be measured, but it stands for an achievement, which is immeasurable. It stands upright for the millions of martyrs who laid down their lives so that we may stand upright, in honour and dignity, amongest the nations of the world.

Most prominently visible is the 150 feet tower that stands on a base measuring 130 feet wide. There is actually a series of seven towers that rise by stages to a height of 150 feet. The foundation was laid on the the first anniversary of the Victory Day. There is actually a plan to build a huge complex in several phases. The entire complex will cover an area of 126 acres. The plan of this complex includes a mosque, a library and a museum. The relics of the Liberation War will be kept in the museum. They will ever remind our countrymen and all who would come to visit the museum of the valiant struggle and the supreme sacrifices of a freedom loving people. Here also will be a clear warning to all oppressors that the weapons of freedom need not be very big, and that oppression will always be defeated. The will of people prevails, for man is born to be free.

The most moving sight of the complex is the several graves of the martyred freedom fighters: close to the tower. standing in front of the graves we bow down our heads in respect, as the towers soar up simbolizing the loftiness of the spirit.

Albert Einstein, the greatest scientist of the twentieth century and one of the supreme intellects of all time, was born in March 14, 1879 in the city of Ulm in Germany. he attended high school in Switzerland and become a Swiss citizen in 1901.

He was appointed an examiner at the swiss Patent Office in 1902. He served at this post for three years. He received his Ph. D in 1905 from the University of Zurich, but was unable to find any academic position at that time. However, the same year he began to publish original papers on the theoritical aspects of the problems of Physics. Within a few years, these papers, particularly the one of relativity, established his reputation as one of the most brilliant and original scientists in the world. His therries were highly controversial. In spite of this, he was appointed Professor at the University of Berlin, at the same time becoming a member of the Prussian academy of science. In 1921 he was awarded Nobel prize for Physics.

Einstein’s situation in Germany became precious when Hitler rose to power. He moved to Princeton, New jersy, U.S.A, in 1933 to work at the institute of advanced study and in 1940, he became a United States citizen.

Einstein’s first marriage ended in divorce, but his second was quite happy. he had two children, both boys. he died in 1955 in Princeton.                                                                                                     5
