Number (Singular, Plural)

ইংরেজিতে একটা কথা আছে Once for all (শেষবার, চিরতরে). বারবার নয়, একটা টপিক একবারই সঠিক নিয়মে ভালোভাবে শিখুন! আর কখনও নতুন করে শেখার দরকার হবেনা।

Today's topic: Number (Singular and Plural). এতোক্ষণে হয়ত অনেকেরই ভাবা শেষ, ও! singular, plural. খুবই সহজ- s, es যুক্ত করলেই হলো! আপনার ভাবনাটা কিঞ্চিত সঠিকও বটে! কিন্তু এর বিস্তৃতি বেশ ব্যাপক। English grammar, spoken English সর্বোপরি subject-verb agreement এর ক্ষেত্রে এটি জানা আবশ্যক।

Number বা বচন: যা দ্বারা ব্যক্তি, বস্তু তথা noun/pronoun এর সংখ্যা বুঝায় তাকে number (বচন) বলে। 

Definition:The number refers to the count of nouns or pronouns.

সাধারণত  Countable noun (যা গনণা করা যায়) এর singular ও plural form হয়ে থাকে । যথা: book-books, my-our, it-they, pen-pens etc. *Numbers are of two types. 

1. Singular Number:

It refers to the count of only one of a noun or pronoun.

Example: chair, table, aunt, father, goose, etc.

2. Plural Number (বহুবচন):

It refers to the count of more than one of a noun or pronoun.

Example: chairs, tables, aunts, fathers, geese, etc.

(How to change number)

*Numerous (অসংখ্য) RULES are there to change the number from singular to plural. They are as follows-

Rule 1:

In general “s” is used at the end of a singular noun to make it plural

Example:

Rule 2:

If  there exist s, o, sh, ch, x and z in the end, “es” gets to be used.

Examples:

Rule 3:

While  pronunciation of ch is like “k”, just “s” is added at the end

Part 1: when there’s a “y” in the end  and a Consonant before that “y”, “i” substitutes it  and an “es” thereafter.

Part 2: but if there’s a vowel ahead of  that “y”, no need to change it, only “s” to add.

Rule 4:

“v” replaces f or fe and then adds an “es” to finish it.

Part 1: “es” to be added if the noun is finished by “o” and a consonant places ahead.

Part 2: but when there’s a vowel before that “o”, only “s” is enough.

Some require changing the middle-vowel of the word to make it plural.

Some  require en, ren and ne to add at last.

Part 1:  if “man” means human being in a compound noun(a  noun that contains two or more words that jointly make a single noun), “men”replaces that “man”.

Part 2: but when “man” is just a part of the word, or it  refers to any ethnic group, race or civilian, there comes “s”.

“s” to be added when there’s a “ful” in the end.

Besides, adding “s” only  in the end gets it done for few.

Rule 9:

Some singular nouns have no plural form, only used in singular.

Adversely, some  are always used as a plural form.

Rule 10:

Though some nouns seem like singular, but actually they are plural.

Similarly, some nouns seem like plural though they are singular.

Some have the same singular and plural form.

In case of letters, numbers and other symbols, it takes an apostrophe and s to change it.

Example:

Sam, write your g’s and y’s clearly.

John, add two 5’s and three 8’s.

Rule 13:

There is no specific rule for changing the number of pronouns. It’s all about memorizing.

Dialogue between a salesperson and a customer

Writing dialogue is a vital part of eveeyday's English. Proper method in writing dialogue is imperative to get good score.

Dialogue is a written composition in which two or more characters are represented as conversing. It is an exchange of ideas and opinions. A basic purpose of dialogue writing skills is to express thoughts in an easy and natural way. However, it does not mean that language may be ungrammatical. By writing dialogue, one is able to understand both sides of opinion and develop the capacity to effectively express the opposite point of view. In keeping with the characters, the composition of dialogue should be spontaneous. It requires careful planning before beginning to write, it is advisable to make a plan or outline of the dialogue.

Dialogue Writing Tips

Carefully read, think and understand the subject. Imagine the characters and their point of view. You should have a clear picture of the persons taking part in the conversation.

Jot down briefly the ideas, opinions and arguments of the imaginary persons and sequence them in logical order.

 

Keep in mind that your dialogue would express the view of the character, he is playing, it should not, in any way, represent your own viewpoint.

Dialogue, when completed, should appear real and spontaneous. For this, it is essential to imagine how in real-life person converse and reproduce them in an easy, familiar and natural manner.

The conversation should rotate between the characters. It should be brisk and rapid.

Avoid a monopoly by one character.

Conversation should not appear to be a public lecture.

Write in a natural, interesting and realistic manner. For this, try to observe how real conversation takes place. In actual conversation, people interrupt each other to answer a question by asking another question or anticipate the question and answer it before being asked. Such elements in the conversation enliven the dialogue.

Use interjections, the element of surprise, exclamation, such as, well, good heaven, bother, oh dear! Oh God! etc. However, do not overuse them.

Dialogue should begin in an interesting way and should not end abruptly. Normally it should end with a definite statement.

Sales Person: Good morning. How can I help you?

Myself: Good morning. I want to buy some books.

Salesperson: There are different kinds of books here. How types of books do you want?

Myself: I want to buy some novels written by Himayun Ahmed.

Salesperson: Okay. You will find the books in those shelves.

Myself: Please bring them.

Salesperson: Here are the books.

Myself: How much do they cost altogether.

Salesperson: 950 taka only.

Myself: Where do I pay them?

Salesperson: In the cash counter over there.

Myself: ok. Thank you.

Salesperson: You are welcome. Please come again.

Dialogue

A dialogue between you and your friend about a village fair.

Myself: Hello Rimi! How are you?

Rimi: I am fine by the grace of Almighty. Thank you. And what about you?

Myself: I am also fine. Rimi, how have you enjoyed your last visit to a village fair?

Rimi: I enjoyed a lot. It was very interesting and funny as well.

Myself: wow! How lucky you are! Could you please share your experiences on how you enjoyed?

Rimi: ok.  Next time, I will take you with me upon your parents' permission.

Homophones: A homophone is a word that is pronounced the same as another word but differs in meaning. A homophone may also differ in spelling. The two words may be spelled the same, as in rose and rose, or differently, as in rain, reign, and rein. বানান ও অর্থ ভিন্ন কিন্তু উচ্চারণ একই ইংরেজীতে এদেরকে হোমোফোন (Homophones) বলা হয়।
