Cyclone Aila

Cyclone Aila    Lessons 2-3

D. Look, listen and read (āĻĻেāĻ–āĻļোāύ āφāϰ āĻĒ⧜).

Cyclone Aila (āϘূāϰ্āĻŖিāĻā§œ āφāχāϞা)

Babul and his family live on the island of Dublar Char (āĻŦাāĻŦুāϞ āĻ“ āϤাāϰ āĻĒāϰিāĻŦাāϰ āĻĻুāĻŦāϞাāϰ āϚāϰ āĻĻ্āĻŦীāĻĒে āĻŦāϏāĻŦাāϏ āĻ•āϰে). Life is good for the family now, but that wasn't true after Cyclone Aila (āĻŦāϰ্āϤāĻŽাāύে āĻĒāϰিāĻŦাāϰেāϰ āĻ…āĻŦāϏ্āĻĨা āĻাāϞāĻ•িāύ্āϤু āϘূāϰ্āĻŖিāĻāĻĄ় āφāχāϞাāϰ āĻĒāϰে āĻ āĻ…āĻŦāϏ্āĻĨা āĻ›িāϞ āύা).

Babul doesn't remember Cyclone Aila, but his parents often talk about that terrible night in 2009 (āĻŦাāĻŦুāϞ āϘূāϰ্āĻŖিāĻā§œ āφāχāϞাāϰ āĻ•āĻĨা āĻŽāύে āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻĒাāϰে āύাāϤāĻŦে āϤাāϰ āĻŦাāĻŦা-āĻŽা āĻĒ্āϰাāϝ়āĻļāχ ā§¨ā§Ļā§Ļ⧝ āϏাāϞেāϰ āϏেāχ āĻāϝ়াāύāĻ• āϰাāϤেāϰ āĻ•āĻĨা āĻŦāϞেāύ).

Babul's father had a grocery shop and his mother worked in a fish farm (āĻŦাāĻŦুāϞেāϰ āĻŦাāĻŦাāϰ āĻŽুāĻĻিāϰ āĻĻোāĻ•াāύ āĻ›িāϞ āĻāĻŦং āϤাāϰ āĻŽা āĻāĻ•āϟি āĻŽাāĻ›েāϰ āĻ–াāĻŽাāϰে āĻ•াāϜ āĻ•āϰāϤেāύ). They had a small house that they shared with Babul's grandparents (āϤাāĻĻেāϰ āĻāĻ•āϟি āĻ›োāϟ āĻŦাāĻĄ়ি āĻ›িāϞ āϝা āϤাāϰা āĻŦাāĻŦুāϞেāϰ āĻĻাāĻĻা-āĻĻাāĻĻিāϰ āϏাāĻĨে āĻাāĻ—āĻাāĻ—ি āĻ•āϰে āĻĨাāĻ•āϤ). Babul was just a baby, but his sister Nipa was six years old (āĻŦাāĻŦুāϞ āϤāĻ–āύ āĻļুāϧুāχ āĻŦাāϚ্āϚাāĻ•িāύ্āϤু āϤাāϰ āĻŦোāύ āύিāĻĒাāϰ āĻŦāϝ়āϏ āϤāĻ–āύ āĻ›āϝ় āĻŦāĻ›āϰ āĻ›িāϞ).

Babul's father told him what happened that day (āĻŦাāĻŦুāϞেāϰ āĻŦাāĻŦা āϤাঁāĻ•ে āĻŦāϞেāύāϏেāĻĻিāύ āĻ•ী āĻšāϝ়েāĻ›িāϞ). There was light rain in the morning on 25 May (⧍ā§Ģ āĻŽে āϏāĻ•াāϞে āĻšাāϞāĻ•া āĻŦৃāώ্āϟি āĻšāϝ়েāĻ›িāϞ). In the afternoon, the wind started to blow and people began to run for their homes (āĻŦিāĻ•েāϞেāĻŦাāϤাāϏ āĻŦāχāϤে āĻļুāϰু āĻ•āϰে āĻāĻŦং āϞোāĻ•েāϰা āϤাāĻĻেāϰ āĻŦাāĻĄ়িāϰ āĻĻিāĻ•ে āĻĻৌāĻĄ়াāϤে āĻļুāϰু āĻ•āϰে). Babul's father closed his shop and his mother came home (āĻŦাāĻŦুāϞেāϰ āĻŦাāĻŦা āϤাāϰ āĻĻোāĻ•াāύ āĻŦāύ্āϧ āĻ•āϰে āĻĻেāϝ় āĻāĻŦং āϤাāϰ āĻŽা āĻŦাāĻĄ়ি āĻĢিāϰে āφāϏেāύ). His grandparents checked the family's emergency kit (āϤাāϰ āĻĻাāĻĻা-āĻĻাāĻĻি āĻĒāϰিāĻŦাāϰেāϰ āϜāϰুāϰী āĻĒ্āϰ⧟োāϜāύেāϰ āĻĨāϞেāϟি āĻĒāϰীāĻ•্āώা āĻ•āϰেāĻ›িāϞেāύ). Their torch was working and they had extra batteries (āϤাāĻĻেāϰ āϟāϰ্āϚ āĻ•াāϜ āĻ•āϰāĻ›িāϞ āĻāĻŦং āϤাāĻĻেāϰ āĻ•াāĻ›ে āĻ…āϤিāϰিāĻ•্āϤ āĻŦ্āϝাāϟাāϰি āĻ›িāϞ). They put the torch, batteries and first aid kit in plastic box (āϤাāϰা āĻĒ্āϞাāϏ্āϟিāĻ•েāϰ āĻŦাāĻ•্āϏে āϟāϰ্āϚāĻŦ্āϝাāϟাāϰি āĻāĻŦং āĻĒ্āϰাāĻĨāĻŽিāĻ• āϚিāĻ•িā§ŽāϏাāϰ āϏāϰāĻž্āϜাāĻŽ āϰাāĻ–ে).

By the evening, the river was rising (āϏāύ্āϧ্āϝাāϰ āĻĻিāĻ•েāύāĻĻীāϰ āĻĒাāĻŖি āĻŦে⧜ে āϝাāϚ্āĻ›িāϞ।). The winds of Cyclone Aila shook the walls of the house as if there was an earthquake (āϘূāϰ্āĻŖিāĻā§œ āφāχāϞাāϰ āĻŦাāϤাāϏ āĻŦাāĻĄ়িāϰ āĻĻেāϝ়াāϞāĻ•ে āĻāĻŽāύāĻাāĻŦে āύাāĻĄ়িāϝ়ে āĻĻিāϝ়েāĻ›িāϞ āϝেāύāύ āĻূāĻŽিāĻ•āĻŽ্āĻĒ āĻšāϞে āĻšāϝ়). Everyone was afraid (āϏāĻŦাāχ āĻāϝ় āĻĒেāϝ়েāĻ›িāϞ). Nipa began to cry (āύিāĻĒা āĻ•াঁāĻĻāϤে āĻļুāϰু āĻ•āϰāϞ). Suddenly, there was an awful noise and the family's roof blew away (āĻšāĻ াā§ŽāĻāĻ•āϟি āĻāϝ়াāύāĻ• āĻļāĻŦ্āĻĻ āĻšāϝ়েāĻ›িāϞ āĻāĻŦং āĻĒāϰিāĻŦাāϰেāϰ āĻ›াāĻĻāϟি āωāĻĄ়ে āĻ—িāϝ়েāĻ›িāϞ)! The sky was dark, but the family could see trees flying over their heads (āφāĻ•াāĻļ āĻ…āύ্āϧāĻ•াāϰ āĻ›িāϞāĻ•িāύ্āϤু āĻĒāϰিāĻŦাāϰāϟি āϤাāĻĻেāϰ āĻŽাāĻĨাāϰ āωāĻĒāϰ āĻĻিāϝ়ে āωāĻĄ়āύ্āϤ āĻ—াāĻ›āĻ—ুāϞি āĻĻেāĻ–āϤে āĻĒেāϝ়েāĻ›িāϞ). Grandmother still says she saw fish flying through the sky (āĻĻাāĻĻিāĻŽা āĻāĻ–āύāĻ“ āĻŦāϞেāύ āϝে āϤিāύি āφāĻ•াāĻļ āĻĻিāϝ়ে āĻŽাāĻ› āωāĻĄ়āϤে āĻĻেāĻ–েāĻ›েāύ).

Cyclone Aila    Lessons 4-5

The next day was awful (āĻĒāϰেāϰ āĻĻিāύāϟা āĻ›িāϞ āĻāϝ়াāύāĻ•). Babul's family couldn't stop crying (āĻ•াāύ্āύা āĻĨাāĻŽাāϤে āĻĒাāϰেāύি āĻŦাāĻŦুāϞেāϰ āĻĒāϰিāĻŦাāϰ). Nipa and grandfather were missing (āύিāĻĒা āĻāĻŦং āĻĻাāĻĻা āύিāĻ–োঁāϜ āĻ›িāϞ). Babul's father went out to look for them (āĻŦাāĻŦুāϞেāϰ āĻŦাāĻŦা āϤাāĻĻেāϰ āĻ–ুঁāϜāϤে āĻŦেāϰ āĻšāύ). He found Nipa in a field (āϤিāύি āĻāĻ•āϟি āĻŽাāĻ ে āύিāĻĒাāĻ•ে āĻ–ুঁāϜে āĻĒেāϝ়েāĻ›িāϞেāύ). She was holding onto a tree and she was covered in mud (āϤিāύি āĻāĻ•āϟি āĻ—াāĻ› āϧāϰে āϰেāĻ–েāĻ›িāϞেāύ āĻāĻŦং āϤিāύি āĻ•াāĻĻাāϝ় āĻĸাāĻ•া āĻ›িāϞেāύ). She could not remember anything (āϏে āĻ•িāĻ›ুāχ āĻŽāύে āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻĒাāϰāĻ›িāϞ āύা). He took Nipa at home and began looking for his father (āϤিāύি āύিāĻĒাāĻ•ে āĻŦাāĻĄ়িāϤে āύিāϝ়ে āϝাāύ āĻāĻŦং āϤাāϰ āĻŦাāĻŦাāϰ āϏāύ্āϧাāύ āĻļুāϰু āĻ•āϰেāύ). He looked

in the fields, the buildings and in the trees (āϏে āĻŽাāĻ েāĻāĻŦāύে āĻāĻŦং āĻ—াāĻ›ে āĻĻেāĻ–āϞ). Many people in Bangladesh were missing after Cyclone Aila, and Babul's grandfather was one of them (āϘূāϰ্āĻŖিāĻā§œ āφāχāϞাāϰ āĻĒāϰ āĻŦাংāϞাāĻĻেāĻļে āĻ…āύেāĻ• āĻŽাāύুāώ āύিāĻ–োঁāϜ āĻ›িāϞāĻāĻŦং āĻŦাāĻŦুāϞেāϰ āĻĻাāĻĻা āϤাāĻĻেāϰ āĻŽāϧ্āϝে āĻāĻ•āϜāύ āĻ›িāϞেāύ).The family never found him (āĻĒāϰিāĻŦাāϰ āϤাāĻ•ে āĻ•āĻ–āύো āĻ–ুঁāϜে āĻĒাāϝ়āύি).

After Cyclone Aila, people worked together (āϘূāϰ্āĻŖিāĻā§œ āφāχāϞাāϰ āĻĒāϰ āĻŽাāύুāώ āĻāĻ•āϏāĻ™্āĻ—ে āĻ•াāϜ āĻ•āϰāϞ). Nipa's school became the shelter for the survivors (āύিāĻĒাāϰ āϏ্āĻ•ুāϞ āĻŦেঁāϚে āϝাāĻ“āϝ়া āĻĻেāϰ āφāĻļ্āϰāϝ়āϏ্āĻĨāϞ āĻšāϝ়ে āωāĻ āϞ). Babul and his family went to live in the school (āĻŦাāĻŦুāϞ āĻ“ āϤাāϰ āĻĒāϰিāĻŦাāϰ āϏ্āĻ•ুāϞে āĻĨাāĻ•āϤে āĻ—িāϝ়েāĻ›িāϞেāύ). The government of Bangladesh and workers from NGOs come to help, but things were very hard (āĻŦাংāϞাāĻĻেāĻļ āϏāϰāĻ•াāϰ āĻāĻŦং āĻāύāϜিāĻ“āĻ—ুāϞিāϰ āĻ•āϰ্āĻŽীāϰা āϏাāĻšাāϝ্āϝ āĻ•āϰāϤে āφāϏেāĻ•িāύ্āϤু āϜিāύিāϏāĻ—ুāϞি āĻ–ুāĻŦ āĻ•āĻ িāύ āĻ›িāϞ). There wasn't enough safe drinking water or food, so many people became ill (āĻĒāϰ্āϝাāĻĒ্āϤ āĻĒāϰিāĻŽাāĻŖে āύিāϰাāĻĒāĻĻ āĻĒাāύীāϝ় āϜāϞ āĻŦা āĻ–াāĻŦাāϰ āĻ›িāϞ āύাāϤাāχ āĻ…āύেāĻ• āϞোāĻ• āĻ…āϏুāϏ্āĻĨ āĻšāϝ়ে āĻĒāĻĄ়েāĻ›িāϞ). In time, people repaired their homes and rebuilt their villages and bridges (āϏāĻŽāϝ়েāϰ āϏাāĻĨে āϏাāĻĨেāϞোāĻ•েāϰা āϤাāĻĻেāϰ āĻŦাāĻĄ়িāĻ—ুāϞি āĻŽেāϰাāĻŽāϤ āĻ•āϰেāĻ›িāϞ āĻāĻŦং āϤাāĻĻেāϰ āĻ—্āϰাāĻŽ āĻ“ āϏেāϤুāĻ—ুāϞি āĻĒুāύāϰ্āύিāϰ্āĻŽাāĻŖ āĻ•āϰেāĻ›িāϞ). Babul feels happy when he looks at the trees and his sister Nipa, but he feels sad about his grandfather (āĻŦাāĻŦুāϞ āϝāĻ–āύ āĻ—াāĻ› āĻāĻŦং āϤাāϰ āĻŦোāύ āύিāĻĒাāϰ āĻĻিāĻ•ে āϤাāĻ•াāϝ় āϤāĻ–āύ āϏে āĻ–ুāĻļি āĻšāϝ়āĻ•িāύ্āϤু āϏে āϤাāϰ āĻĻাāĻĻুāϰ āϜāύ্āϝ āĻĻুঃāĻ– āĻŦোāϧ āĻ•āϰে). His grandmother says, “Don't be sad, Babul (āϤাāϰ āĻ াāĻ•ুāĻŽা āĻŦāϞে, "āĻĻুঃāĻ– āĻ•āϰো āύাāĻŦাāĻŦুāϞ).
